Theatre flats & props
LaFrance Design’s talented craftspeople and scenic artists can bring your visions to life. We have all the tools in our toolbox – from CNC machines to scenic artists – to create the mood and atmosphere for your production.
Building sets and props doesn’t feel like work to us. We’ve had a lot of fun creating unique theatre sets, flats and props. We’ve carved out rock walls and faux antique brick, as well as created vintage “Dickinsonian” sets that included weathered wooden doors and recreated stone fireplaces.
Theatre flats construction
Theatre or Hollywood flats are a simple and effective way to create depth and add visual interest on stage. Using flats we can create buildings, city streets, forests and more to support your story. We can also prepare the flats for suspension or wheels.
We design, construct and paint whatever type of stage flats you require - theatre flats (also called stage or Broadway flats), and fly away sets, including double-sided theatre flats and Hollywood flats (or TV flats).
Our stage and theatre flats are constructed from muslin or stretched canvas. The fabric is stretched to a thin wood frame. These are ideal if you need to have lighter flats to make moving easier. They also can be suspended from a fly tower. There’re great for repurposing; just recover with a new fabric.
Our Hollywood flats are constructed from luan (plywood). These flats can stand freely on the ground or be anchored to a portable base. These are quicker and easier to build than the stage flats. They can be used repeatedly by painting new scenery.
Scenic artists
Give us a bit of paint, brushes, and a surface to paint on and our artists can paint just about anything! Our artists can create murals, 3-dimensional and flat-surfaced scenic paintings creating realistic-looking wood, marble, buildings, gardens…whatever you need. If faux finishes are required, we can do that too.
Our scenic artists can create beautiful scenic backdrops that bring your story to life giving your audience clues as to the specific time and place of the action.
We can paint a backdrop with a woodland scene or a futuristic landscape. Faux finishes can be painted or can be recreated on our wide format printer, up to 60” wide.
Custom-made theatre props
Every theatre set needs props to bring the stage to life. Our designers and fabricators can build just about anything you can dream up.
We work from your designs or can provide a design based on your brief and budget.

CNC machine
If your design requires intricate details that can’t be compromised, our CNC machine will ensure your scenery and backdrops are brought to life exactly as you envisaged.
Using our CNC machine we can create designs in EPS foam, wood, MDF, acrylic, PVC, and aluminum. We can then paint, integrate lighting, add graphics and more in our full-service workshop.
Rentals
We also provide the rental items necessary to build a set. We can provide everything from flats to sandbags and jacks to risers.

Installation
Our skilled install team will deliver and execute sets and props at your studio or on location. We’ll ensure that everything is fully functional, and is secure and safe before your crew arrives!
